Synopsis
The Chesley Awards is the first book to present all of the
winners of the prestigious annual Chesley Awards in one volume.
Contains over 300 illustrations, together with comments from the winning
artists about their techniques and the thought-processes behind
the images they create. Includes biographies of all winners and lists of all
nominees since inception.
Established in 1985 and named in honour of the renowned Chesley Bonestell,
the annual Chesley Awards are internationally respected as the most prestigious in the
field of the fantastic arts. As with the Oscars, the Chesley-winners are
decided by the votes of practitioners – the members of the professional body
ASFA (the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists). Those who have
won one of the coveted Chesleys can truly regard themselves as at the pinnacle
of professional achievement.
From Rick Berry, Chesley Bonestell, Brom, Vincent Di Fate, Bob Eggleton, Frank Kelly Freas
and Frank Frazetta to Brian Froud, Tom Kidd, Don Maitz, Barclay Shaw, Anne Sudworth and
Drew Willis, The Chesley Awards is a fine collection of science fiction and fantasy art
for any lover of the Art of the Fantastic.
John Grant's past works include the phenomenally successful Encyclopedia of Walt Disney's
Animated Characters and with John Clute, The Encyclopedia of Fantasy.
John is a recipient of numerous awards including the Hugo, the World Fantasy Award,
The Locus Award, a rare British Science Fiction Association Special Award and, indeed,
a Chesley (as Art Director).
Elizabeth Humphrey, current President of ASFA, provides a thoughtful introduction setting the
Chelsey Awards in context, and in an extensive appendix, lists, year by year and
category by category, every known Chesley Award nominee since 1985. Elizabeth is a professional artist
(sculptor and goldsmith) as well as freelance writer of short stories and poems.
Pamela D. Scoville is the Director of the Animation Art Guild and
one of the world's leading appraisers of animation art.
