Brom's art is on the dark side of the genre - the pictures are of demons and the grittier end of fantasy. On looking through the images contained in this book it is easy to see why he has painted so frequently for the Role-Play Gaming market. His fantasy figures evoke all the feeling of a hard fought battle - these are people who have fought, they have armour, weaponry and clothing that has seen use. Shields are chipped and dented, swords stained and worn. His range though is far wider than just art for games. There is art here with the feel of horror comics but without some of the over-the-top stylings often seen in comics. There are images suggesting vampirism without the need to show sharpened teeth, images with an erotic overtone (often fetish related) without the need to expose excessive flesh. And in the middle you find images like Lost Note which to me suggests an almost Pre-Raphaelite feeling and is without genre subject - it is just a great painting. You will not find overly detailed backgrounds in some of the paintings within this book. Often they are suggested or occassional just washes of colour in a manner similar to some of the greats of portrait painters of history although maybe with a different subject. There is a trememdous passion to a lot of the art within this book, and a realism to the anatomies of the human(ish) subjects. This is not art of a heroic nature where the men have rippling muscles and the women smooth skin and a lack of clothing (not to say that such art does not have its place but the characters in these paintings are more normally proportioned). This is a book full of tremendous artwork although a few manage to stand out from even this lofty company. Sewer Man (evokes a horror bounty hunter feel), Web of Charms, Ghoul Queen (the cover image) and the previously mentioned Last Note. But this is a book full of paintings I would enjoy hanging on my walls. This is tremendous. |
