This book differs from many of the other fantastic art books we've read. Generally these books are presented with a commentary of the artist's career, and the reasons behind the images shown. Here the Nigel Suckling's text is a series of folktales about unicorns from all parts of the globe illustrated with some wonderful pictures by Linda and Roger Garland.

The artwork is also quite varied taking in many different styles, each reflecting on the tale being illustrated. From the Pre-Raphaelite styling of 'Terese and the Unicorn', through more traditional fantasy art with 'End of the Battle', Chinese influence with 'Suddenly a Ch'i-Lin rose out of the waters' and 'The Chinese Creation', Indian art with 'Dance Prayer to Ganesh', and many more.

But, in my opinion it is the reduced palette paintings that are the most striking with 'The Unicorn will be the spirit at all times' painted entirely in light shades of purple and 'Unicorn Triumphant' in yellows through to browns.

The art in this book differs from a lot of fantasy art in many ways. But perhaps the most obvious is the realism here. The figures are realitic not an image of perfection as found in much fantasy art. Even with the subject matter the fantasy element is often a small touch in what is a wonderfully painted landscape.

This might not appeal to you if your idea of fantasy art is musclebound Conan style warriors rescuing unfathomably voluptuous (and, of course, scantily-clad) maidens but if you like good art, and enjoy reading short takes on folk myths then you shouldn't be going far wrong.
