For as long as she could remember Kara's grandfather had told her stories of ancient Ireland and the Sidhe. When he died he bequeathed her his violin, Quicksilver. Years later, when her father is diagnosed with cancer, she is faced with an agonising decision. With the family funds being rapidly depleted she must pawn her beloved Quicksilver. Whilst waiting in a pawnshop, "Yesterday's Dreams" for the owner Maggie to value the violin she notices some photographs behind the counter showing some people who look vaguely familiar. What Kara does not realise that there is more to Quicksilver than meets the eye. Over the following weeks she will learn more about her mysterious Celtic ancestry and face a threat that may destroy her friends, family and possibly her life. Yesterday's Dreams is an enchanting tale of Celtic mystery, musical magic and malevolent forces. It is hard to believe that this is Danielle Ackley-McPhail's first novel as the writing style is confident and fluid. She explores Celtic mythology with an accuracy that must come from either extensive research or a great deal of personal insight. The characters are beautifully detailed. The reader is made to feel the conflict that Kara experiences when she is forced to pawn her violin. A wonderfully enchanting tale, Yesterday's Dreams leaves just enough unfinished storylines to (hopefully) guarantee that a sequel is in the offing. |

Synopsis History...Legacy...Destiny... Kara O'Keefe had not realized, at the age of eight, how much her beloved Grandda had left her with his passing. All she knew was he would no long tell her magical tales of ancient Ireland and the Sidhe. He would no longer share with her nature's secrets or push her to find that brilliant swirling point deep inside that made her music magical. All she knew was she had lost her greatest treasure. Once destined for Julliard, but now merely an overly gifted violin instructor, Kara discovers at the age of twenty-three that she was wrong as she is abruptly confronted with the wealth, and weight, of her fantastic inheritance…and the threat of losing her father next. It is at Yesterday's Dreams, a pawnshop tucked away on a quiet Soho street, where Kara discovers her true legacy, her own inner power, and destiny and danger both begin to stalk her. Forced to give up Quicksilver, her cherished violin and the only physical link with her long-gone Grandda, Kara's selfless sacrifice becomes the key to her fate. Confused by the radical turn her life has taken and pursued by malevolent forces she does not understand, Kara O'Keefe must trust in a dead man she loved but never truly knew and Maggie McCormick, the living myth charged with helping her to survive. Has she inherited the tenacious strength of her Celtic ancestors, or would she fall beneath the onslaught of uncompromising Fate ? "...a solid story." - Piers Anthony |
