Wow, an original vampire story!!! These are few and far between. "Come the Night" is the story of a vampire (Lazarus) who is half mortal, half Grigori and married to a Tracker (vampire hunter). Complicated? Nah! OK, I found the prologue a little hard going as there is so much information to absorb in a relatively short space of time but this is necessary to provide a firm foundation for the forthcoming story. Once you get into the novel per se it becomes a delight to read. And what a story! An evil vampire (a Dark Breed) wants to take possession of the "Amulet of Christ" (an amulet containing a few drops of Christ's blood). This would enable him to exist in the mortal world, father children and thus form a new tribe that would destroy all mortal existence. The tale begins in Rome 476 A.D., and continues in Ireland 1095. I found the writing style riveting. This book resulted in a couple of very late nights as I just had to find out what would happen next. I actually had to force myself to put it down on the first night as I would have gone on to finish it in 1 sitting (and not slept at all!). Come the Night is Angelique Armae's first book, not that you'd have guessed from reading it, and hopefully it will not be her last. It is possibly the most unusual vampire tale I have read since "A Taste of Blood Wine" (Freda Warrington). Excellent! |
