Okay I'm a sucker for books like this. Mind you the major part of this appeal lies with the autobiographical sections of the book in between the extracts from Asimov's first 99 books. The extracts themselves have become a mixed bunch through the ravages of time. None of them are bad or badly written, just that time has past since the stories or essays from which these are drawn were originally written. Even at the time Asimov compiled this book (1969) some of the content was outdated, but he included it (with certain provision and explanations of why he liked the sections). And as explained by Asimov in the introduction this is a very self-indulgent book for the author – being as it is nothing more than a celebration of the author's first century of books. This is a book for the Asimov fan, and if you are amongst the masses of people that are, then this is a book you should track down and read. |
