Just a couple of months ago, Eva Leroy was a normal mom/librarian. She's still a mother and a librarian, but outside of Broken Heart, she would not be considered normal. Thanks to a temporarily insane vampire, she and several other single parents are now vampires themselves and their town has been taken over as a haven for paranormal beings. Like all the others, Eva is adjusting, but she's still not happy when she's told she'll have to move because her house is in a blindspot. That becomes the least of her worries when hunters come looking for Nefertitti, an ancient, evil vampire who is controlling a pack of monsters. Even that little matter pales in comparison to the situation when Eva is infected with the Taint, the one disease a vampire can get, and faces dying slowly and painfully. She does not want to leave her daughter behind or to leave this world now that she's found love with Lorcan, the vampire who turned her. Somehow, the two incidents are related, though, and solving one might solve the other. She can hope, anyway. Fun and suspense mix well in this latest entry in the rising paranormal mom-lit-romance blend genre. Broken Heart is an interesting place to visit; the way Ms. Beardsley has imagined building a society for vampires and lycanthropes is intriguingly inventive. I hope that there are many more stories there to tell. |
