Disaster movies are big. End times fascinates people. Space has drawn the attention of wandering imaginations since man first looked into the night sky. There are few who do not wonder about death, and virtually everything has come out of the closet except the coats. The authors take all of these elements and blast them into one book of stories that seem alien to each other but are tied together. Death is taking a holiday and looking for love while far above the hapless Earth, the occupants of a space station realize they are going to crash into the earth unless something radical happens, so the formerly macho brute half of the team decides since he's about to be dead, he might as well confess the the Commie slut that he's really gay. Fortunately, they do find a way around crashing into the earth, slamming into an anti-matter comet to keep it from beating them to it, unless the aliens come and rape the Earth before all that happens. Of course, most of the citizens of our world have no idea what is happening except for a small boy who somehow comprehends the coming Armegeddons. The world's current political leadership is in the hands of several best selling sf writers and its religious affairs seem to be under the leader of the infamous Jesus Seminar, making the end of all things seem like a decent idea, the question being, which end will get to be the one to finish. Much like Spaceballs or the Last Remake of Beau Geste did on film, Earthdoom lampoons a broad spectrum of doomsday scenarios in one fell swoop. Hidden under it all is possibly a very serious point, but then again, perhaps not. |
