This book grabs you right from the start. On page one Wyatt Weston, the book's lead character awakes from a dream to find his left arm has melted. It's an interesting start to a novel, and one that makes you want to find out what happens next. Well, once Wyatt has reassembled his limb by sheer force of will and memory we get to visit the world where he lives. And this is a very odd world. In this world people disappear and those that knew them quickly forget they even existed, and Wyatt is part of this. He is a Sweeper, and his has been responsible for many “disappearances”. But unlike many of the people he meets day-to-day Wyatt is determined to remember the people that are no longer around, regularly repeating a personal litany of memory. His life is about to change. In this Philip K. Dick style world Wyatt is one of the tiny players, with the world controlled by the powerful conglomerates and the ruling elite. But when Victor Crist – one of this world's powerful - enters Wyatt's life and offers him a job as his bodyguard, everything in Wyatt's life changes. There is a major power struggle going on and Victor sees Wyatt as a great asset. Normally I am not the greatest fan of these distopia futures, nor of cyberpunk style stories. I usually find that they follow too rigid a path and retread PKD's paths, or have gone so far in the esoteric as to be completely unreadable. This one however doesn't feel derivative, it's writing style is clear and straight forward. And when you add in Wyatt's melting and reforming it almost has a fantasy feeling. This is not a book for anyone who wants in depth background. If you like overly rich detail of your world with the action proceeding at a leisurely pace this will not be to your taste. The action here is the be all and end all of this book. And very fortunately the action is compelling. This is a book that deserves a wider audience than its publication by a small press publisher is likely to grant it. Pity really, but anyone who does get the chance will not be disappointed. |
