The Dark Jewels Series is a truly awesome Dark Fantasy series and this is an excellent compilation of short stories all dealing with the Dark Jewels world and while it certainly could be read as a stand alone novel, my recommendation would be to read it after reading at least one, if not all, of the Dark Jewels Novels. These stories will give the reader additional insights into Anne Bishop's marvelous characters. Weaver of Dreams: a short story dealing with the golden spiders and dragons and the creation of the jewels of power. An excellent background piece. The Prince of Ebon Rih follows Heir to the Shadows. This story covers the meeting and mating of Lucivar's Yaslana's and his wife Marion following her rescue by Jaenelle from a brutal encounter. The story adds insight into Lucivar's past as well as enriching the wonderful character base from the second novel. Zuulaman explains some of Saeten's background and how he came to be the feared High Lord of Hell he is and what can happen when someone he loves is threatened. Kaeleer's Heart takes place after Queen of Darkness, telling of Jaenelle's struggle back to health and her love for her consort Daemon. Kaeleer's Heart further develops both Daemon's love for Jaenelle, his insecurities due to his dark years before Jaenelle and the familial resemblance to his father Saeten's fierce and terrible abilities and protective qualities. All four are positively excellent stories that add texture and colour to the richly woven tapestry that Anne Bishop created in her Dark Jewels novels. A must read for anyone who has visited this multi faceted world. |
