Once again Charlotte Boyett Compo has given us another window into the dark sensual world of the Reapers and Windverse and once again it is a gripping tale of deep enduring love and passion as well as the manipulative and cruel depths some will go to achieve their ends. Doctor Davan Shanahan is having a bad hair day and her thrill at finding she's being assigned to serve on the front is fast dissipating when she finds out her posting is to the pleasure ship, a flying brothel called Pleasures' Foehn. When she finds out the Captain is no less than the Black Sun, Cair Ghrian, she can't help but wonder who someone of his stature and reputation pissed off. Cair Ghrian is not impressed with his commission as Captain of the Pleasures Foehn, and his hangover combined with Davan's take no prisoners' attitude is not what he needs right now. When Cair finds out his brother the heir to the throne has abdicated and his younger brother has been killed, he hits the bottle with a vengeance, and it's Davan through their growing friendship who finds and comforts him and is subsequently caught up in the Queens plot to get Cair married off to her, something she has been totally unaware of. What began as a grudging friendship and mutual respect has blossomed into a deep and enduring passion and when Davan is kidnapped after their marriage and Cair is temporary blinded and deafened that they discover just how deep their love is for each other. The journey to find and free Davan has some very unexpected twists and more of the Reaper history is uncovered as well as some infinitely interesting developments. This is a wonderfully passionate, loving novel with some laugh out loud moments, some steamy love scenes and some really poignant meetings. Another jewel in the Reaper crown. |
