You have undoubtedly heard the phrase separated at birth, but this story takes the concept a step beyond what is implied. When a witch is born, a part of her is separated and killed, in the normal course of events. It is thought that the Doppelganger is a soulless shell. However, there is an instance of the Doppelganger surviving. Mirayu's shadow self somehow acquired a soul and survived, growing up unaware of the rest of herself, and becoming the bounty hunter known as Mirage. She has always avoided witches, because she is tired of being accused of being one because of her red hair. She has no idea that in strictest terms, she might not be considered a real person, until Mirayu walks into her life, ready to kill her so that she can gain control of her magic. However, Mirayu sees that Mirage is not a thing, but as real as she is, and can not kill her twin self. The two women join forces to try and solve the mystery that Mirage is working on and find a way they can both exist. Their quest is long, and not without peril, but it is the only acceptable way. Be sure and read the glossary at the back before you begin this book. The world in which the witches and Doppelgangers live is a complex one. The story of these two women is equally so. They can not be seen as the Jekyll and Hyde halves of each other, they are the same person, yet distinct from each other, not opposites. It is an unusual storyline, one that will keep you thinking, not a light read. |
