Harry Dresden is concerned. Business has been going very slowly recently and the rent will soon be due. So when a mutilated corpse is discovered, surrounded by strange paw prints, the extent of the brutality would seem to hint at a possible supernatural cause (not to mention the fact that the killing took place during the full moon). Soon Dresden finds himself in the middle of an investigation that threatens not only his own life but also that of the people around him. Only he can discover the identity of the killer or killers before it is too late.

Fool Moon is the second book of the Dresden Files and follows the experiences of Harry Dresden, a Wizard, who works in and around Chicago. Unlike many of the others supposedly in touch with the supernatural, Dresden is the real thing and it is this fact that makes him such a useful consultant to the Chicago PD.

The Dresden Files is an entertaining series of books that include the usual cast of supernatural characters: vampires, ghosts and (indeed) werewolves. Butcher manages to create an entertaining and amusing story without it being particularly horrific. This makes the series ideal for young adult readers who are looking to move on from the world of a certain Master Potter.

Since I first started reading these books, a few years ago, the Harry Dresden stories have been made into an enjoyable TV series and I am delighted to say that, for once, the TV Harry and the book Harry are reasonably similar so if you have enjoyed watching the series then I do recommend you try the stories as well.

A good entertaining romp through the darker side of Chicago.

The Wizard

The second book of The Dresden Files starts with Harry Dresden on a diet of ramin noodles, so brokehe has to look up to see the bottom. Then, a strange spell on a sheet of paper and a curious student tempt him with a steak dinner. The action goes a fast pace from there on. Trouble comes, not only from biker gangs and mobsters, but from mysterious wolves that are not wolves. Murders come fast and furious and when Murphy's cut out of the loop, she does her best to put Harry in jail. Then, as if things weren't bad enough, the FBI jumps into the madhouse with both feet.

Maybe Harry says it best.  'A mangled corpse in the middle of a blood-drenched floor. Berserk FBI field agents drawing guns and shooting to kill. A little kung-fu, a little John Wayne, and a few casual threats. It was just one more night on the job.'

Are the Good Guys good or bad? Are the Bad Guys good? The twists and turns of this plot will keep you guessing right up until the very end. Just one warning, don't start it too close to bedtime. You can't put this book down.
