The fourth book in the Kushiel's Scion Series is as well written and engrossing as its predecessors, but it is a much more poignant story following the growth of Imriel, son of Melisande, foster son of Phedre and Joscelin. Jacqueline Carey continues with a depth of intrigue in character with the continuing storyline following Imriel through adolescence and his voyage of self discovery. A survivor of unspeakable horrors and treachery, raised with unreserved love by Phedre and Joscelin, he must come to terms with his heritage, suspicions surrounding his parentage, and his own nature to become the man he wishes to be. It's through his adventures traveling with just a single companion; he discovers his own inner strength, as well as his responsibilities and honor as a member of royalty. This is an excellent book following in the footsteps of excellent predecessors. |
