Zoey's world was a normal teen one. Though not trouble free, it was good. Then, out of nowhere, she is Marked and has no choice but to go to the House of Night, or she will die. Everyone knows that those who are Marked will turn into vampyres, so she is instantly a pariah. Her only hope of acceptance lies with her grandmother, but when she journeys to see the elderly woman, she meets Nyx, the goddess of night and vampires, instead and her Mark is enhanced as the goddess claims her for her own. Now at peace, Zoey is able to accept her new life.

As she begins to fit into her new school, she finds that Fledgling teens are much like other kids. She makes new friends, but perhaps more importantly, she makes an enemy who she will have to confront in the heart stopping finale of this opening story.

The Casts have created put a very interesting new spin on vampire lore. The action is fast paced and absorbing, interspersing light moments among the intensity. When you reach the climax of the tale, you'll be on the edge of your seat. Though this is labeled a young adult novel, I strongly suspect adults of any age will enjoy it.

Synopsis
The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird's world, vampyres have always existed. In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampyre - that is, if she makes it through the Change. Not all of those who are chosen do. It's tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling. She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx. But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers. When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny - with a little help from her new vampyre friends.
