Virgin Kane was a PI. His jobs usually entailed trailing some errant husband to try and gain evidence of his infidelities. So when Mrs McCormack hired him to follow her husband he thought it was just another case. He certainly wasn't expecting her to shoot him in the head. That certainly put a kink in his day! So when he wakes up a few hours later in a hospital bed he is more than a little surprised – but not half as surprised as when he discovers that he is a reincarnation of the first Cain (of Cain and Abel fame). He has only just started to recover from the shock when he is told that he should not be dead and that the future of the realms of Heaven. Hell and Earth depend upon him. He has no idea what is to come. One thing that is for certain he will see and experience things that will make him re-evaluate everything he previously held to be true. It is amazing who your allies turn out to be. Ascension is the first book in the Heaven's Falling series and, amazingly it is Gary Charles first novel. He has created some of the most vivid technicolour characters that I have ever read and has set them in a truly disturbing world where the previously accepted line between good and evil hasn't just been blurred it has been practically erased. Reviewing books for this website I have read a number of first-time novels. Usually they are pretty good, now and again they get to excellent and once every so often I get one that is absolutely stunning – and this is it. The concept of Kane working with a demon named Damien and Satan (also known as Lucy Fur) to save the world is truly one of the most original I have ever read. The writing style is fast moving and compelling but Charles manages to stop things getting too intense by throwing in just the right amount of humour. It would have been easy for Charles to make light of this immensely complex storyline. Instead he embraces it and takes you, the reader, to places you have never even dared to imagine – even in your worse nightmares. This all leads to an ending that is surprising and exciting. But this is actually just the beginning. There is Redemption to come and I am so looking forward to it. |
