Having destroyed the Dragonlink shirt Jelindel thought that life should be good. OK, so she had banished her companions, Zimak and Daretor to another paraworld but sometimes sacrifices are necessary! But when the Temple where she lives is attacked by Deadmoon warriors and she is taken captive, she discovers that her captors want the one thing she cannot give them – the mail shirt. Escaping their clutches Jelindel disguised herself as Jaelin and got herself a position as assistant navigator on the ship Dark Empress. During the voyage she meets up with Madame Dione, a witch who has been tutoring Jelindel in the magical craft. During the meeting Madame Dione tells Jelindel that someone is trying to gather the Pentacle Gems in order to power a machine that will allow the user to travel between worlds. It is Jelindel's task to gather the Gems so that they can be destroyed before they are put to an evil use. When they first arrived in the paraworld, Zimak and Daretor found themselves at the scene of a recent massacre. As they looked around Daretor decided that they should attack the victors and free their prisoners, but before they can act they are swept up by a vortex and deposited in mid air. Plummeting to a certain death they are rescued at the last moment by a group of dragonriders and find themselves in the midst of a gladiator school. However, when they discover that the laws of physics that govern this new world mean that they are stronger and faster than the other inhabitants it becomes clear that not only can they survive this ordeal they can become champions. Soon Jelindel realises that in order to fulfil her task she will need the assistance of Zimak and Daretor but even if she were able to find them, what is the likelihood that they will help her? Dragonfang is the sequel to the book Dragonlinks and picks up shortly after the previous story finishes. Jelindel, having destroyed the Dragonlink shirt is now trying to make a new life following her dedication to the Sisters of Verity but, as you might expect, things are never that easy. The bad guys do not believe that she could destroy the Dragonlink shirt, knowing it's potential power. What follows is a classic romp including a section where Jelindel disguises herself as a young man, Jaelin, and works as an assistant navigator on a sailing ship. In such close confines you would think that people would notice that Jaelin is actually a girl but, needless to say, her disguise is perfect. This book is great fun. The two main storylines follow the adventures of Jelindel, as she tries to find the Pentacle Gems, and Daretor and Zimak as they attempt to survive a series of life-threatening ordeals (including a body-swap with an evil Prince…..). As you might expect from a book by Paul Collins, Dragonfang is a beautifully detailed, enchanting fantasy story that keeps you hooked from the first word to the last. I can't wait for the next instalment! |
