This is a collection of short stories that spans horror and science fiction. The longest tale runs to seven pages. This is not to say that there is little here to get your teeth into, little to grip you and make you want to read further. Kenneth Crist has a good writing style and is proficient at this length of fiction. There are tales here that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand erect in good Twilight Zone style, a couple of more gory tales and some humourous sf shorts that should make a wry little smile appear on your face. The opening tale 'A Matter of Scale' is one of these sf/humour stories and while not the most original of ideas it is certainly presented here in a good manner and makes a pleasant few minutes reading. The we move instantly into the quirky supernatural mode of 'Billy at One O'Clock, a tale that reminded of some of Roald Dahl's darker writing. It's 'Milepost 44' and 'The Family Business' that truly move into Dahl/Twilight Zone territory. These are a little unnerving. I remember as a kid reading old black and white horror comics, and some of the feeling I remember form them is found in these tales, although I don't think the erotic content of 'The Girl of My Dreams' would have made it passed comic censors. I've always found collection like this are great to pick up and read a quick tale, and Mr. Crist's easy to read style and slightly warped view of the world means we have a book here that makes a few minutes here and there throughout your day can be passed in a very anjoyable manner. |
