Ophelia Jensen is a librarian. But she is far from ordinary as she has inherited psychic powers. But rather than embracing her abilities she resists using them believing them to be dangerous. Her grandmother, Abby, does not share her worries and has fully embraced her powers, happily living life as a witch. Living in a small town you tend to know everyone so when a mysterious stranger comes into town everyone knows about it and the latest visitor is no exception. So when he seems to be becoming attracted to Ophelia it is impossible to keep it a secret. Coincident with his arrival there are a series of catastrophes culminating with the theft of some bomb making equipment and the discovery of a dead body in Ophelia's garden! Will Ophelia and Abby have to draw on their special abilities to discover the truth behind the strange occurrences? Only time will tell. This book was great fun to read. Ophelia is a vibrant character who struggles to come to terms with her magical abilities. Being able to hear people's most intimate thoughts is not the gift you would think it could be and Ophelia has done everything possible to suppress her powers. She also believes that Abby's acceptance of her abilities could be dangerous, as it is not desirable to be different in a small town. It would have been very easy for Shirley Damsgaard to make the main crux of the story a magical one but she is not so obvious. Although Ophelia discovers the truth by using some of her powers, the story behind the various occurrences is a refreshingly ordinary one. I thoroughly enjoyed this story in fact once I started to read I didn't put the book down until I had finished – that is definitely the sign of an entertaining book. Shirley Damsgaard has created a wonderful new character in Ophelia Jensen and I am looking forward to reading more of her adventures in the future. Fabulous! |
