When used-furniture salesman, Doug Patterson, is offered a house full of antique furniture at a knockdown price he starts to believe that his luck is finally on the change. However, when it turns out that not only is the furniture is haunted but it was sold to him by a ghost he starts to think that someone is trying to tell him something. Then a series of mysterious occurrences force him to change career and he finds himself setting up a business de-haunting furniture for people.

One day he comes across some of his father's possessions that seem to hint that his father was involved in the occult. Almost immediately he is drawn into a world of darkness where only he can defeat paranormal forces to save the lives of the innocent.

Unfinished Business is a beautifully written short novel that is infinitely readable. The style is relaxed and enchanting and encourages the reader to read "just one more" chapter. As well as the ongoing storyline of Patterson's search for the truth about his father, there are a number of incidental storylines that add a rich texture to the character of Doug Patterson.

Although the story revolves around possessions (in both senses of the word) and witchcraft, Scarlett Dean does not resort to archetypal themes. The various hauntings are original and rather refreshing. There is a common trend of unfinished business that Dean Patterson must resolve in order to give the victim (and the ghost) peace.

This was the first novel by Scarlett Dean that I have read and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was relaxing, comfortable and satisfying to read. It also sets the scene nicely for a further series of Doug Patterson novels. Splendid stuff!
