The Earth has been seeded with a super crop of giant green plants which have succeeded in wiping out nearly all rival life forms on Earth. One group of people have managed to keep a small area free of the inedible alien plant so that they can still maintain their farm. But when machines begin wiping out the farm animals and any people who get in their way how will the people continue to survive? This is a wonderful novel, a post-apocalypse story in the style of John Wyndham's Day of the Triffids. This is a comparision in which this novel holds it's own – it is a match for Wyndham's work. The characters are wonderfully presented, understandable and totally consistent. The setting described more than adequately allowing the reader to fully visualise the locations described. And the story is thoroughly involving. Thomas M. Disch is a gifted writer who is deserving of much more success than he has had. |
