I consider these three books to be amongst my very favourite Fantasy Books. I first read these books about fifteen years ago and was instantly captivated. The richness of the Land, the depth to which Donaldson describes the culture and the characters is quite staggering. That he manages to do this in books of around 400-500 pages when other Fantasy authors fail to do this in books twice that length is superb. The main character can be irritating beyond description with his unbelief, leaves you trying to comprehend why the people of the Land accept him so readily yet he does manage to get your support. The only criticism I can level at this book is that occassionally the vocabulary gets a little weighty, with the author using an obscure word when he clearly had many more common terms that would have sufficed. But this is a minor criticism. Superb! |
