Having not seen the TV series adapted from this book, I had no pre-conceived ideas. The story is in two distinct parts, in that we have Peter Carson on a visit to see a friend in the remote parts of Cumbria who becomes suspicious about a tragedy causing the death of his friend and the Police investigating being told to drop their case by Special Forces from the government. At the beginning of the book, there is a chapter, which gives the basis of one of the main characters and his ethics. Several other characters evolve from the Police, the "Government Officials" and other interested parties. The setting is in a wet and windswept village in Cumbria, a clinic supposedly for infertility treatments, and various auspices of investigation. It is quite a cunning book and holds your interest throughout - only towards the end does it reveal the true nature of the scenario. There are clues during the chapters, but you only realise this in retrospect. Not particularly horrific book but extremely interesting and well written, the author is very good at describing each character and his/her strengths and fallibilities. A good read and worth buying. |
