The world of Aedracmorae has been virtually destroyed. After the betrayal by his wife and brother and the loss of one of his daughters, Alandon released a cataclysm on the seven kingdoms of Aedracmorae and took his remaining daughter away to safety – to sleep until the Prophecy of the New Creators is realised and the Guardians are called. As the Ancients gather they bring gifts for the new Guardians and it is these gifts that will give the Guardians the talents they will need to restore Aedracmorae to its former glory. After training in their new abilities each Guardian is dedicated to one of the flytes of Dragons who will assist the Guardians in their quest to reunite the seven kingdoms. Dragon Queen is a book written in the truest traditions of fantasy. There are witches and dragons. Magical abilities and ancient beings. Characters are betrayed by those they consider to be friends and others go further than you would ever imagine. In short, it is just what you want from a book about dragons and kingdoms. This is a very easy book to read. The writing is relaxed and doesn't challenge you too much. The characters are endearing and make you care about their fates. You want everything to turn out OK and (needless to say) it does. The main Guardian, Yavie, has a naivety that can be a little frustrating but ultimately makes her a very sympathetic character. However, I have to confess that my favourite characters were the dragons themselves. Each flyte has their own personalities and strengths and are far from the usual 2-dimensional beasts that you get in other fantasy stories. This book is good fun and should appeal to readers of all ages. Go on, give it a try! |
