When his best friend Artie and the date Artie had set him up with (Kate) are found brutally murdered hours after a double date (with the fourth place taken by Artie's girlfriend Molly), Jack Dwyer is shocked to say the least. However when the ghost of his best friend appears to him and tells him of the nature of his murder and of the existence of a race of werewolf-like creatures called Prowlers his acceptance of things is stretched virtually as far as it can go. These prowlers have been amongst humankind since before recorded time but have always been scattered, hiding in small groups. But now they are being united and will become a powerful force, one that could threaten mankind's rulership of Earth. However Artie needs Jack to believe him if anything can be done Artie's attempts at persuading Jack of the truth of his claims unfortunately backfire, to the extent that these Prowlers are now aware of Jack and that he knows their secret. Jack is now a prey that they must kill. Together with Artie's girlfriend Molly, his sister Courtney and the bartender of Bridget's Irish Rose pub, the bar he and Courtney run in Boston need to stand against the Prowlers, and try to stop their plans. This is a horror book written with a minimum of adult language and virtually no gore. This is a book that I would not hesitate in recommending to teenage relatives or the children of friends who like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Maybe this is not suprising as the author is best known for his novelisations of Buffy and Angel. But don't let it's suitability for younger readers put you off. This book is a refreshing comfortable read. If you are like me then something a little more lightweight - brain candy - is needed occasionaly after reading intense serious heavy books. And if you consider this book in this light it should appeal. Review written for The Alien Online Website |
