Just a few weeks have passed since Jack Dwyer, his sister Courtney, their pub's barman Bill, an old school friend Molly and the ghost of Jack's best friend Artie first faced the Prowlers. They hear reports of killings in a small town called Buckton – kilings that sound like the work of Prowlers. Jack and Molly decide to travel to Buckton to investigate the murders and see if there is any truth behind their fears of the Prowlers being responsible. They go armed with a large arsenal of guns supplied by their barman, Bill. Upon reaching Buckton Jack begins to see ghosts, lots of ghosts. All of whom were victims of the Prowlers killed in the area around Buckton. Until recently though there had been no killings in Buckton itself. As with the first of the Prowlers books, this is a horror-lite book. You will not find great descriptive gory passages, nor adult language or sex scenes. This is horror aimed squarely at the teenage audience who might be watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Not that this means that it will not be satisfying to older readers. The characters are quite involving, the writing is comfortable and makes for a quick read. It's quite a refreshing read, the ideal book to read after an intense heavy story. I find every now and again it's good to read something that acts like a mind cleanser, it gets me back in the mood to read again. This is such a book. Being the second book in the series the characters are familiar - the mythology of the Prowlers having been established previously. Given that, in this book there is no need to introduce these elements, the author can concentrate on telling a story and it's precisely what he does, producing a feel good horror story - if such a thing is possible. This is non-threatening horror, ideal for any fans of Buffy or soft scares. Review written for The Alien Online Website |
