Based inside an innocuous Boston building the Menagerie are mankind's last line of defence. Their leader, the mysterious Mr Doyle, has brought them together from a variety of planes of existence and have a wide range of skills and abilities. So when there is a report of a strange series of murders in Greece, people being turned into stone, Doyle realises that only the Menagerie would be able to find out the truth behind the killings and bring the culprit to justice. As their investigation continues they begin to realise that this is no ordinary murderer – the queen of the Gorgons has risen. Tears of the Furies is the latest novel in the Menagerie series and follows a bizarre group of investigators as they try to find out the reason that people are being turned into stone. Soon they find themselves following the trail of the Queen of the Gorgons and to defeat her they may have to descend into Hell its self. This is a great story. The members of the Menagerie have such a wonderful range of characters and skills including a ghost, a vampire, a shapeshifter and a demon! You wouldn't think that they could work together but somehow it works – their varied abilities blend to form one integrated team. This series of stories is unlike anything I have ever read before. The way that Golden and Sniegoski can write about a group of supernatural beings without making the story too fantastic shows true skill. Tears of the Furies is a superb novel that is incredibly easy to read and thoroughly enjoyable. Some of the best fantasy I have ever read – and that is saying something. |
