When Prince Rupert and Princess Julia fled Forest Kingdom and the legends they had become they had no clear idea of where they might be going or what adventures lay ahead of them. And of the many and varied ideas they may have had, certainly none of them saw their roles as Captains of the Haven Guards, and never in their wildest dreams did they imagine they would be once again called back to save the Forest Kingdom from the Blue Moon again.

Known now as Hawk and Fisher, they have made a name for themselves as Captains in the Haven Guard, tough, take no nonsense, unbeatable, law upholding (when it fit the situation) and honourable cops. Pretty much just being themselves, only amplified.

It's with a bit of irony that Hawk is starting to question the validity of what they're doing when they're called in to fight, as cops, a battle Hawk is opposed to. When Allen Chance and his companion talking dog Chappie, show up right after the battle with the news that King Harald has been murdered and the Blue Moon is returning, both Hawk and Fisher know they must return to the Forest Kingdom. This time though, it will be on their terms as Hawk and Fisher, representatives of Prince Rupert and Princess Julia and they will conduct things as they see fit.

The Kingdom is in chaos with even more political manipulators vying for power along with calls from the peasants for the southern idea of Democracy. Within all this chaos, Hawk and Fisher must investigate Harald's murder and sort through those who mean to overthrow the monarchy. The reappearance of the evil Inverted Cathedral seems more and more like it may contain at least some of the answers they will need to solve Harald's mysterious death.

With political intrigue, high magic, wild magic, chaos magic, greed, and power mongering to deal with, Hawk and Fisher handle everything in their typical fashion, if they can't fight it, they'll reason it out, and together, they can do just about anything. Simon R. Green creates vivid three dimensional characters, complete with very human attributes you simply can't help but relate to, or at least laugh with. Most are not simply good or evil, but a blend of both, some with their own agendas, some just trying to find out where they fit in and how to make their lives count, but all of them intriguing. A great second novel following the adventures of Hawk and Fisher, and a wonderful set up for subsequent novels.
