Rachel only agreed to become David's Alpha so that he would have a pack; one need not be a were to be a member of a pack, and for the insurance benefits. Now, things are getting complicated for Rachel Morgan, again. First, she has to defend her claim in a duel with a werewolf, and she can not were. Then, she gets word that her ex, Nick, is in trouble with the weres in another city.

For all she cares, Mister worse than brainless can die horribly, but he has Jax, her partner Jenks' pixie son with him. Moreover, he has a powerful artifact that could tip the scales in the uneasy detente among the Inderlanders in favor of the shapeshifters. Rachel has to rescue Nick, get the relic to safety, save Jax, keep from getting killed herself, and perhaps achieve some closure with Nick.

First, she has to mend fences with Jenks and work some dangerous magic that will add some blackness to her soul. To make matters even hairier, no pun intended, Ivy, her other partner, still has issues, in fact, she has even more issues than she did when last we saw her. Once again, Rachel is in the middle of a whole, huge handful of problems, and readers can love every word of it.

This is a book that presents its audience with a paradox - you want to know what happens immediately or sooner, but at the same time, it's a book to take slowly and savor. Ms. Harrison is a master at character creation, making you want to get to know all of these people thoroughly. The humor and action are both dynamic in this complex, fascinating world. I only wish she wrote faster.
