Synopsis
Life in tenth century Norway has never been easy for Tore Nordahldatr. The sea,
or the Swan road as it is known, plays a vital part in everyday life. Everyday
life is anything but ordinary. As a woman her life has a limited number of paths
to travel; but, when another family with a vendetta slaughters her family, her
life changes, as she never imagined it could. In order to escape also being
killed, she must live her life as a teenage boy until her older brother can
return from sea with the Viking chieftain and settle this intertribal dispute.
After accidentally taking a sword sacred to the God, Tyr, Tore appeals to the
Goddess Sif for protection. Sif strikes a bargain with Tyr. If Tore, living as
Eirik the Silent Graafell, proves herself worthy of the sword in battle, she
will be allowed to live and go free. Even if Tore is able to fulfill her bargain
with the Gods, dealing with her brother will be another matter. When he returns
he wants the family who killed his family dead. But, in killing that family will
all that Tore has learned to know and love be destroyed as well? Will Tore be
left alone again? Will all turn out right in this world across the Swan Road?
