Halloran is a member of a personal security company, Achilles Shield. He is seconded to a company called Magma to protect an enigmatic employee Kline. This company searches for new deposits of oil worldwide to utilise for profit. Cora is female secretary to Kline and knows his idiosyncrasies and secrets. Halloran is told that Kline has been threatened because he has the psychic ability find the oil as well as other abilities. Halloran is sceptical but through his affection for Cora, finds out a lot more than was in his original brief and that Kline's ability comes from an evil source. I expected this to be a good book as all James Herbert's are, and I was not disapponted. The plot was very compulsive reading and, although, it seemed quite complex at first, it is a highly logical story that gradually introduces many twists and turns. The main character, Halloran is your usual hero-type but gradually becomes involved with the evil of Kline, his secret and the history behind. Halloran has to confront his past, help Cora through her addiction to Kline and come to terms with his own feelings. Cora has problems, which are written in a sympathetic way in contrast the impression of Kline himself. A book very difficult to leave - a totally wonderful read. |
