The latest offering in Kay Hooper's engrossing Bishop/Special Crimes Unit series, Chill of Fear is significantly darker in theme and less of a romantic based novel than its predecessors, but is no less gripping.

Quentin Hayes is an FBI agent in Noah Bishops Special Crimes Unit, a unit dedicated to using the special paranormal talents of its agents to solve the cases that reek of the unexplained or are especially heinous in nature. Quentin Hayes is a Seer, and though highly successful with the Special Crime unit, has yet to exorcise one case from his past. As a young teen, a young girl he considered like a sister, was found murdered and the killer never found. For years he has been coming back to Leisure Tennesse and the Victorian Resort known simply as "The Lodge" trying to uncover anything that might lead to the killer's apprehension.

Diana Brisco is a guest at "The Lodge" attending a therapeutic workshop in another attempt to get a grip on her life. All her life she has suffered from undetermined mental illness going from one doctor to another in an attempt to regain some control of her life. She has suffered from "seeing" unexplained things and blackouts.

When Quentin and Diana meet unexpectedly over breakfast, Quentin immediately recognizes her as someone with paranormal talents, but knows it will be an uphill battle to convince Diana she is indeed not crazy, nor mentally ill as the doctors have told her all her life but a gifted though untrained Medium. Both are aware of something not being quite right, but even Quentin's "Seer" abilities are unable, possibly impeded by his closeness to the case, to see through the dark miasma surrounding The Lodge,.

Through their investigations, both physical and metaphysical, they stumble into a very old, dark and deadly secrets, with tendrils into both theirs pasts. This is another extremely will written book full of intriguing twists and turns. This book could be read easily as a stand alone novel, but the reader will only benefit from having read the others in the series. This book will grab you from the first page and will keep you up and wide awake until the last.
