Leslie, a photographer, makes her living taking pictures of the darker side of life - sado-masochistic, violent and dramatic. Her dreams are filled with horrific images of an ancient evil watching her. One night, while shooting photographs in a cemetery, she meets a ghost! As she returns home she receives a telephone call to tell her that one of her old school friends has been brutally murdered. Coatl, The God of the Dead, intends to kill Leslie's closest friends, one by one, until she is all alone. He visits her in her dreams, filling her nights with images of Xibalba, the underworld. Why has Coatl targeted Leslie? What is his eventual aim? Will someone manage to stop him before he gets too close? The Void is an Aztec-themed horror story where an unknown killer, in the guise of an Aztec God, is slowly killing people in an attempt to make the main character, Leslie, vulnerable. For the majority of the book the true identity of Coatl is left for the reader to determine, and for once it was not obvious. The murders carried out by Coatl are violent, bloody and extremely graphic making this not a book for the squeamish! The characters in The Void are vivid and powerful. Teri Jacobs's writing is well paced and, if anything, picks up more momentum as the storyline develops. The story is complex but still compelling. The sections set in the Aztec underworld are filled with lengthy, authentic names such as Tezcatlipoca and Mictlantecutli but don't worry, you don't need to be an expert in this culture to enjoy The Void – far from it. The names just add an extra dimension to the tale. This is not, by any means, an "easy read" but it is well worth the effort. |
