Lucan is a man on a mission, to retrieve a particular Star Stone that will be the key to him claiming his destined role as the Prince of Swords. Twenty seven years after he learned of his destiny, while at the Emperor's court, he sees Isadora, a lovely widow reputed to be witch, wearing a ring that holds his stone. To gain it, he asks for her as a mistress, and the Emperor grants this, to Isadora's dismay.

She has been grieving her lost husband for years, and is determined never to love again, never to hurt again. Moreover, even if she wanted to love, she is cursed, and will lose the man she loves, if she ever does. However, under dire threats, she does as the Emperor asks, and manages to fall in love in the process, as does Lucan. However, the Emperor is corrupt, and soon the lovers will be in a race for their lives.

Even should they escape, Isadora's first concern is to break the curse, not only for herself and Lucan, but for her sisters who are married and could lose their loves as well.

There is very little "magic" in this book, despite the Witch in the title. In fact, the few attemtps to impose it upon the plot only serve to weigh things down. Though Isadora finding healing for her heart is a sweet story, overall, the characters do not evoke sympathy in the reader, as their motives seems obscure.
