Thad Beaumont is a writer. His stories to date have not made much money for himself, his wife and daughter. So, he writes horrific gangster stories under the pseudonym George Stark. Unfortunately, Thad is found out by a journalist to be writing under both names and is asked for cash to keep quiet. Thad and his wife decide to "kill off" George Stark and concentrate on the novels under his own name. They have publicity photographs taken at a so-called "burial" and go ahead. But... Killings begin and Thad's fingerprints as well as other evidence is found at the scene incriminating him despite the fact that at the time Thad is hundreds of miles away with witnesses. It becomes obvious that George has materialised and wants to be brought back to write again... Will the Police believe Thad... That's the story.. The characters in this book are once again, superb. Well written in impeccable English with real convincing emotions and natural acts of fear, hate and violence. The character George Stark is horrendous but not nauseous and quite easy to stomach. The police officer, Alan, is excellent from his initial disbelief to his realisation carried through all aspects of his feelings. I always praise Stephen King it seems, but this this is yet another excellent book that is almost impossible to put down. His mastery of the English language and prose is without fault and he is not afraid to use larger more unusual words when needed. Another book not to miss. |
