When Auron finally breaks out of his shell and finds himself one of four hatchlings he thought that nothing could harm him, protected by his parents and safe in their cave. But when he feels a deep down desire to attack his brother dragon he doesn't realise that he is just following a biological urge that has always ensured the strongest of the breed survive. Having defeated his brother Auron begins to learn what it is to be a dragon but soon realises that he is unlike all of the others – he is a grey: no scales, no desire to eat gold but with the ability to change colour and merge into the background. Everything seems to be perfect until the day when a band of slave-trading dwarves break into the cave killing his mother and one of his sisters. Auron and his other sister, Wistala, escape and decide to try and find their father and reform the family. But when they are attacked by a group of elves Auron sends Wistala on alone as he tries to distract the elves. Soon Auron finds himself alone, journeying through the lands trying to find his father and sister but when he hears tales of how two dragons, a male and a young female had been killed he believes his family to have been destroyed so decides to spend the rest of his time seeking out an ancient dragon, NooMoahk. In doing this he meets a number of different species and makes some lasting friendships but will he ever his goal of finding the oldest and most wise of dragons? Dragon Champion is an enchanting story of a young dragon's search for answers to help him understand what it is to be a dragon. Auron has no parental guidance as he makes his way through the world but he meets a number of characters who help him achieve more than he ever could alone. During his travels he meets elves and dwarves, becomes an honorary wolf and helps to release a number of other dragons from slavery and it is these experiences that make him into the honourable dragon he is. It is these unusual friendships that give the story its underlying theme of seeing past our differences and all working together. But unlike a lesser author, E.E. Knight doesn't find it necessary to labour the fact. This is a heart-warming story full of adventure where good deeds and friendship always succeed. The characters are wonderfully endearing and the adventures that Auron experiences as he grows into an adult dragon are exciting and entertaining. A superb introduction to what I hope will be a wonderful series. |
