David Valentine has fought against the Kurian Order for most of his life. The Vampiric Kur control most of Earth; only small disparate pockets of human resistance fighters still hold out against their would-be masters. Bit by bit, the Resistance strengthen their position, living in hope that one day they will regain their lost world. So when Valentine hears rumours of a mysterious weapon located somewhere in the Caribbean he realises that this may give the Resistance the chance of destroying the Kur once and for all. But in order to retrieve the weapon he will need a ship and a crew. But no one is going to lend a group of resistance fighters a ship to go up against the Kurian Order. Tale of the Thunderbolt is the third book in the Vampire Earth series and follows the life of David Valentine as he, and his fellow resistance fighters, strive to defeat the Kurian Order. In order to get hold of a ship and retrieve the mysterious weapon Valentine must establish a new identity, as marine Captain Rowan. Working on board the Thunderbolt he knows he has to find out if any of the crew would be willing to follow him if he told the truth about his mission – one thing for sure though, the Captain would definitely not understand! This whole series has been extremely well thought out. Often, when you have an ongoing storyline across a number of books you get the feeling that the author is finding it difficult to sustain the momentum. E.E. Knight has no such problem. The pace of the writing ebbs and flows with the theme of the story – as the action hots up so does the pace of the writing making the book extremely easy to read. I do not know how many books there will be in the whole Vampire Earth series but it is clear from the end of this volume that the story isn’t over yet. I can only imagine what adventures, fears and heroics lie in wait for me. |
