This book is fiction/adventure rather than the usual horror story. We have a physically and mentally scarred ex-police computer operator who accidentally meets a young lady in trouble. Whilst trying to locate her, Stewart (the computer operator) is hounded by a team of heavies employed by an obscure government department. The two characters eventually meet up and it becomes obvious that the armed agents are pursuing the woman for her knowledge. There is also the element of past history with Stewart and the reason for his scarring. Add to this a really bad, sadistic agent in pursuit and in contrast, a loveable mongrel dog. Nobody is, as they seem. The characters are superb as usual and combine excitement with comedy and pathos. The main two are totally believable and one almost feels part of their story. The villain is truly villainous and has very sadistic moments. The whole book is a joy to read throughout and the prose is precise and descriptive The plot runs along at a fast speed and although the book appears to be quite long it is never boring or tedious. Well worth reading but does not contain the usual Koontz horror element. |
