Bargains made, payment demanded, book one of the Legacies is the story of the reincarnation of Chantel in this time period and her continued efforts to defeat the evil Jonar as prophesied so very many years ago. Chantel has been betrayed in her attempt to retrieve the crystal, captured by a Blackthorne agent, Jonar's present day organization, she knows her life may well be forfeit, but to be set adrift by her own father and refused aid seems like the biggest betrayal of all. What she can't quite figure out though is why the crystal feels like it belongs around her neck and why they keep telling her to confess to being someone named Antea while they torture her. In pain, she cries silently out to Devlin, the man who has haunted her dreams for as long as she can remember, dreams filled with passion in his arms as well as anguish, and blood, memories always there but never quite clear, never quite complete. With Jonar on his way it becomes apparent that Devlin will not be her savior, he is after all a dream, and that she will have to depend upon herself and find some way to escape. When her captor cuts her down from where she has been hanging while being tortured, she feigns greater weakness than she feels, due largely to the aid of the crystal around her neck, and manages to surprise and kill him. Grabbing what clothes she can find and an automatic rifle she flees the compound for the desert outside. Paralleling the road she makes her way to a small village, and its there Devlin and company find her, after being called in by Chantel's brother for a rescue. Devlin is sure Chantel is Antea reincarnated, but there is something that keeps niggling at the back of his brain, something he should remember but can't, something he knows is important. Given his history with Antea, his supposed former wife, he can't imagine why he should be in any way attracted to Chantel, he hated Antea, couldn't bring himself to even touch her and yet he can't seem to quell his desire for Chantel nor keep his hands off her, and when he sees the bruises and cuts from being tortured, he is beside himself with rage. Returning Chantel to France to Galen's former Castle, now the stronghold of the Shadow Warriors, things just don't jive with Antea's past behavior, and the dreams continue to unfold, revealing bits of a history Chantel fears will impact greatly on her present. Devlin and Chantel's intense desire for each other are reflected in the passionate scenes between them and in their growing ardor for each other. Only though acceptance and trust will Devlin recover the memories stolen from him those many long years ago, but will it be soon enough to stop another tragedy in this time and will it be enough to defeat Jonar once and for all. This second novel, though technically the first in the series, continues the pace and depth started in the first and is every bit as enthralling and sizzling as the prequel, Shattered Legacy. This has every indication of being one very awesome series and I can't wait for the next book. While this book does cover some of the history of the prequel, do yourself a favour and buy them both and read Shattered Legacy first. Truly a first rate sensual dark fantasy series. |
