Rayne McDonald is a vampire slayer (sound familiar?). It seems that, like in Buffy, there is a slayer born into every generation and this time it is Rayne. The only problem is the local vampire coven leader, Magnus has bitten her sister, and although she has been cured of the vamp "infection" she is still dating him!

Rayne is approached by her high-school drama coach and told that he is actually the senior vice president of Slayer Inc (an organisation who track the vampire community to ensure they stay inline). She is surprised when he asks her to infiltrate the vampire world to kill a maverick vamp who is threatening to dethrone her sister's boyfriend. To do this she must go to The Blood Bar, an underground nightclub where humans go to be bitten by vampires. However, things don't go quite to plan and it becomes very clear that Rayne will need help.

Enter Jareth. Vampire, Goth and seriously sexy. Will Rayne be able to keep her mind on the job long enough to discover exactly what is going on?

This book is great fun to read. A bit of entertaining fluff that makes you laugh and provides a nice amount of distraction. Sometimes, when you have read a couple of heavyweight novels you need something as light-hearted as this to refresh you ready for the next tome.

This book is perfect for it's target audience – young adults. It is easy to read and guaranteed to leave you with a smile on your face. Rayne MacDonald is a real live wire who isn't afraid to tell you what she thinks (as she does, in the blog that she writes throughout the book).

Great stuff!

Rayne's goal in life was to be a vampire; after all her boyfriend, Magnus, was one. However, Mag failed to differentiate between Rayne and her twin, Sunny, and bit the wrong girl. So, not only has Rayne lost her boyfriend, but she's lost her hope of unlife. You know the saying when a door closes, a window opens? Rayne's finding that to be true. It turns out she is the chosen one of this generation, the girl who is supposed to slay vampires, but only the bad ones.

Slayers Inc, recognizes there are some good ones, like Magnus, and want him to stay in power. With an evil vampire out to take down Magnus using bio-weapons, Rayne has a double impetus to stake the dude. She also has help she is not sure she wants at first in the form of a very easy on the eyes, undercover vamp, Jareth. Of course, being a slayer and semi-dating a new vampire are not all fun and games. It is dangerous work, demanding sacrifices, and exposing Rayne to trolls on her blog that chronicles her adventures.

No matter how old you are, if you enjoyed Buffy and Angel, odds are you will love this as well. Rayne is a snappy, smart aleck heroine with a unique take on life. Laughs come fast and furious, even in the grimmest moments. I look forward to seeing how the series develops.
