Aisling Grey is a Guardian - one who uses her magic abilities to protect people from demon attacks (and other similar paranormal incidents). However, she is also, accidentally, a Demon Lord; a position that is in direct conflict with her birthright as a Guardian. If this was not enough she is also engaged to a Dragon, and not just any dragon. Her fiance is Drake Vireo, wyvern (leader) of the green dragons. So, with a wedding to plan, demon attacks to thwart and a conspiracy between the various clans of dragons to uncover, life is rather busy for Aisling. Add to this the unwelcome attentions of Fiat (wyvern of the blue dragons) and she is understandably a little distracted. However, she still has her trusty demon companion, Jim, in support - even if he is in the form of a Newfoundland. So the last thing she needs is more pressure being applied by her stepmother trying to organise the perfect society wedding. Somehow a demon attack, for once, seems to be the perfect distraction. Holy Smokes is a light-hearted romp through the underworld following the exploits of Aisling Grey as she struggles to align the various aspects of her life. There are some wonderful characters - one of the best being her Demon companion Jim who is in the form of a rather large Newfoundland dog with a fetish for Mrs Peel (of Avengers fame). Despite the light humorous nature of this book it is definitely aimed at adults as some of the more intimae scenes between Aisling and Drake certainly do not pull their punches. As an easy-to-read interlude between other heavier novels this book is ideal. Relaxing, simple and thoroughly enjoyable. |
