Midnight Tableau is a collection of 12 short dark stories. Essentially all relating to the feeling of being trapped, each story approaches the concept from a different angle:

In 'Lured' a young diver goes down to visit an old wreck. Having heard stories of other divers who lost their lives after becoming lost in the labyrinth of corridors inside the ship he is determined not to suffer the same fate.

'La Araña Afortunada' follows the story of a young woman, desperate to be part of the in-crowd, who is invited out for an evening but finds herself trapped in a public bathroom by a rather large tarantula.

'Down in the Cellar' – when Dylan's mom tried to get him to go with her to the market he refused, preferring to stay at home. He wanted to show her that he was all grown up, that he was the man of the house, now that his Dad had left. When the electricity goes out, right in the middle of the hoovering, Dylan knows that all he has to do is go down into the cellar and push the switch on the metal box.

In 'The Lizards Tale' Douglas Goodman seems to have a wonderful life. His daughter and grandchildren are coming to stay for the holidays. Everything seems marvellous – until a TV news crew report a shocking discovery in the garden of a house in Queens.

'Close Your Eyes, Sweet Angel', is possibly the most touching of the stories. Chandra has been working as a prostitute for many years. When she became pregnant she felt she was doing the best thing for her young daughter sending her to live with her grandmother. One day, coming back from her work place, Chandra finds herself being followed by a young girl, soaking wet, who no-one else seems to notice.

'Coven of the Unwanted' is set in a detention centre for disturbed young people. Nancy Callahan is the head of the female section of the "school" and takes her job very seriously. When a particularly disturbed young woman is admitted to the centre she is determined to do everything in her power to help.

What is particularly interesting about this collection is the way that the concept of being trapped has been explored in such an extensive number of ways. You have characters physically trapped, emotionally trapped and, in the case of Coven, trapped in a myriad of ways within the same story. The young girls feel trapped within the school, the head feels trapped within her body (hating the fact that she is "freakishly tall" – hmm, the character is shorter than I am) and a variety of the characters are trapped by their personal circumstances.

An excellent collection, wide ranging and well crafted.

  Back Cover Blurb:
Midnight Tableau is a tightly crafted collection of twelve tales of dark fiction that is something noteworthy within the genre.  The stories are thematic portraits of the human essence, a shadowy montage of our dark, individual souls.  There are no vampires, werewolves or gratuitous gore in the stories.  These select tales are sophisticated pieces that aim to be more creepy than scary, more chilling than shocking.  The collection contains developed characters, original plots, dark humor, and lively, active prose.

The author's writing has been influenced by the great works of Richard Matheson, Stephen King, Ed Gorman, Shirley Jackson from within the genre and others, such as John Irving, Wally Lamb, and Tom Robbins from the mainstream.
