Derek Adams could be a detective out an American detective show with his rumpled appearance and quirky, affable demeanor. His latest case will test the limits of his good nature though. Fiona Dunlop needs to find a legendary amulet stolen from her home before her husband returns. Looking at the picture of it, Derek is prettty sure the thief did her a favor, it's the ugliest thing he's ever seen. However, the promised pay is good enough that even when finding out Mr. Dunlop is a notorious gangster, he is only given pause.

When everyone Derek talks to starts dying and he's literally hauled in for questioning, the case is definitely personal. Derek learns that the piece he's looking for is the Johnson Amulet, which the author has written a non-fiction book on, by the by, a thing of occult power that could have devastating effects on all the world. To stop that power from being unleashed, Derek must journey into another realm with people he can't trust, risking everything in the process.

Much of the book will read like a Rockford Files re-run. Not until the last portion does the mystic enter into the mix, so people who simply want a good mystery should not be off put by the paranormal-ness.
