In order to give Bella a chance at a "normal" life, Edward Cullen, the vampire who loves her, and his family leave town, disappearing as if they had never been there. Immediately, the girl enters a sort of "fugue" state, where she is only half alive and cares about nothing.

She play acts at life until she realizes that when she experiences danger, she can "hear" Edward in her mind. Soon, however, Bella does not have to seek danger, it has found her. Another vampire wants her dead to avenge the murder of her lover and Bella's best friend has manifested his werewolf heritage. Though Bella might not care about the risk to herself, she has to deal with the danger or lose all those she loves.

This may be targeted to a teen audience, but there is much to draw adults into the plot. Bella's introspective narration is compelling and makes the words come to life. Her grief process will strike a chord with many who have known what it feels like to lose someone, and though her manner of coping is not advisable or possible in some aspects, the fact that she does manage to find hope again is encouraging.
