George Mellier was an ordinary little boy being brought up in a small English village close to the Welsh border. His father left the family to join the army in 1934 and never returned home again. As a result George was raised mainly by his mother and grandparents. Having left school, like many others, he went off to university. During a holiday he went to work in a fruit picking camp where he met Mo Heap, an overlooker for one of the farms. As he worked on the farm George found himself acting as a translator for many of the overseas workers and as a result he became friends with Mo Heap. He also became very close to Mo's granddaughter, Helen, and soon realised he was falling in love. As Helen still had two years of study ahead of her George decided to travel to Australia to visit a friend he met while fruit picking. His intention was to obtain work in Australia to earn sufficient money for his return journey. During his travels George received the disturbing news that his mother was dreadfully ill and he returned to his home in the UK. Shortly before she dies his mother told him some strange facts about his father's death – that his father's soul was not at peace and could not be able to join her after she died. George determined to follow his father's travels to discover the truth about his death and to try and save his soul. He certainly did not realise the lengths he would be forced to go to and the risks he would have to take. When I first picked up this book I was a little worried. I am not a religious person and the synopsis on the dust cover seemed to hint that this was going to be of an extremely religious nature. I think it would be better to say that it is a very spiritual book which looks at the conflict between good and evil and examines a number of other belief systems including that of the Aborigines of Australia. This has to be one of the most original stories I have ever read. On one hand you have a man battling against evil spirits to try and save his father's soul and on the other you have a fascinating story of a young man experiencing a number of pagan and alternative religions and having his eyes opened to their ancient origins. It is not often that you read a book that affects you on so many levels. This is truly one of the finest novels I have ever read. Outstanding! |
