Billibub Baddings is a private investigator. Working in Chicago during the late 1920s he finds himself crossing the paths of such infamous criminals as Al Capone. However Billibub Baddings is no ordinary PI. He is a dwarf – a real dwarf – from the High Lands of Gryfennos.

When one of Capone's "foot soldiers" is murdered, the dead man's girlfriend approaches Baddings and asks him to investigate. Soon it becomes apparent that the dead man had been protecting a strange artefact for Capone, a weapon that could possibly bring an end to the Gangland Wars.

The investigation progresses with Baddings using his own unique talents to discover the truth behind the murder but it is not until he receives a personal invitation to dine with Capone that he truly realises the position he is in and the importance of the mysterious artefact.

When Baddings discovers a picture of the sword he realises that rather than being some ancient artefact it is in fact from a more magical origin as the weapon has a strange script running along its length – a script that Baddings immediately recognises as Elvish. But what is such a magical item doing in Chicago? Surely his involvement in the situation must be more than mere coincidence? Will he live long enough to discover the truth? Only time will tell.

The Case of the Singing Sword is a truly unique take on the traditional Prohibition-Era gangster story. The main character, Billibub Baddings, is a dwarf who arrived in Chicago by accident when he fell through a Portal of Oblivion and landed in a Chicago library. Baggings then spent some considerable time living in the library, learning to speak English, reading up on the history of Chicago and stealing the librarian's lunches!

This is an unusual story – it rather feels like Sam Spade meets Lord of the Rings. But don't worry that it takes its self too seriously – far from it. The story is punctuated with humorous moments and obscure references to Billibub's home world.

A nice, light-hearted tale that can't fail to bring a smile.
