In an urban gothic alternate Earth, vampires and humans are at war. These vampires were created by a disease, and most of the old lore is simply not true, but they are deadly and dangerous. Among their number is Violet, a young woman who was transformed and who lost her child to the disease. Unlike most illnesses, this one does not weaken the victim, but makes them feel better and stronger than ever. It also shortens their lives. During a courier mission for the hemophages, the vampires, Violet opens her package and finds inside it a nine year old boy who could be the key to salvation for others like her. Six could help cure them, and Violet, acting out of a desire for the child she lost, can not condemn him to death. In a second, the pair becomes targets for both sides in the war. Though Ms. Navarro is an able writer, the fact is the material she was given to work with is rather dry. Concepts ably used in the Matrix and perhaps even to an extent, the X-Files, fail to work here. It's hard to care about the people in this stark land, and what is likely a very visual movie does not translate well to words. |
