Windshake is a small town in the depths of the Appalachian Mountains. Tamara, a psychologist, has lived here all of her life. Ever since being a small child Tamara has been plagued by visions and nightmares that seem to predict tragic events - a condition she calls "The Gloomies".

A strange entity is invading the woods around Windshake. It takes the form of a strange glowing fungus that, on contact with livings beings, takes over the body and goes in search of others to infest.

As the fungus takes a hold over the town Tamara is aware of the Gloomies becoming more active. She senses the intentions of the glowing fungus and it seems that she is the only person who can defeat it.

The Harvest is a horror story in the most traditional sense – a strange creature takes over the world and can only be defeated by selfless acts by various key characters. Despite it not being totally original I have to say that The Harvest is extremely well written with a cast of superb characters. In particular the character of the moonshiner is particularly well realised.

We have all seen the movies where the intrepid band of adventurers go up against the evil entity (be it killer bees, rats or a glow-in-the-dark fungus), all seems lost and then at the last-ditch attempt they defeat the baddie and save the world. Well, The Harvest is no exception.

I don't want it to sound as though I didn't enjoy this book as nothing could be further from the truth. I loved every word. Sometimes a bit of traditional horror is just what the doctor ordered.
