When Hallie Moore's twin sister, Heather, is murdered her family is understandably devastated. During the investigation Hallie gives up her job and moves to Woodbury to give support to her sister's husband and son. One year on the killer is still at large and the anniversary of the murder is looming. Hallie visits the scene of the killing to pay her respects. As she kneels to place flowers where her sister's body was discovered she discovers her sister's locket in the grass. As the police had searched the area one year earlier Hallie quickly realises that the killer must also have revisited the spot and somehow have lost the locket. As well as finding the necklace Hallie suddenly feels as though her sister's spirit is present at the site. As young children the twins had discovered a telepathic link between themselves which had lasted until Heather had an accident and was left unconscious for a few days - but now, after Heather's death, it seems to have returned. As time progresses Hallie finds herself experiencing periods of lost time and realises that she is buying groceries that she has never used before – pink nail varnish that her sister used to like, and cigarettes (despite neither of the sisters ever smoking). Soon the experiences become more physical as a scar that Heather received as a child suddenly appears on Hallie's wrist and she realises that Heather's spirit is living inside her body. This symbiotic relationship apparently has two benefits. Heather gets to spend time with her husband and family and Hallie begins to discover information that may help the police identify the killer. But will they manage to apprehend the murderer before he selects another victim? Kindred Spirit is a supernatural tale of twin sisters who are separated when one of them is murdered. After the anniversary of the killing the surviving sister starts to realise that her sister's spirit is inhabiting her body and is trying to help her identify the killer. But she also realises that she is experiencing feelings and thoughts that clearly are not from her sister. So could they be from one of the killer's earlier victims? This is a wonderfully eerie little story. As Hallie starts to lose her own identity and take on her sister's she is forced to make a choice between her own existence and that of her sister. As the story progresses her sister's presence becomes more forceful and Hallie finds herself almost taking a secondary role in her own body. As well as experiencing the story from the point of view of Hallie we also see various scenes through the eyes of the killer as he selects his next victim hoping that this time the killing will erase the memories of his past. This story was fantastic. It kept me hooked from the very beginning. Although the idea of twins being psychically linked is not original, the way in which this particular book was written made for a refreshing and compelling tale. Superb! |
