Orphaned at an early age, Odette was left in the care of her older sister, Vanda. A few years later her sister's husband took her to stay with relatives in Athla. On reaching her eighteenth birthday Odette found that the Athlan law decreed that all women learn the rites of the "Great Balance" that determined the relationship between men and women. Meanwhile, Vanda and the priests dedicated to the god Loki planned to bring Odette back to her homeland and use her as part of an ancient ritual ? to release Loki back into the world. Ravished Wings is described as an Erotic Fantasy. However, for me, it rises above other Erotica books in one fundamental manner. Classic erotica (well, the ones that I have ready anyway) seem to consist of a series of very graphic sex scenes with just enough plot to glue them all together. With Ravished Wings you get a well-written fantasy story with a sexual theme and a number, although not excessive, of explicit sexual liaisons. If you removed the erotic content there would still be a damned good fantasy tale left. The descriptions of a society where women serve to fulfil men's sexual needs are beautifully written. Despite the apparent repression of women's rights there are still clear laws outlawing the abuse of women. The main character's struggle as she learns to accept the restrictive covenants of this world is compelling reading. One thing that made this erotica more readable than others was the phrasing of the sex scenes. As an adult I have rather tired of ridiculous euphemisms for both parts of the anatomy or the act in general. Sometimes I have wondered if authors have an ongoing competition to come up with the most outrageous terminology! Ravished Wings is a classic fantasy story with just enough "spice" to heat things up a little... Ideal for the adult fantasy fan but not for anyone easily offended. |
